What is Bubble Mapping
Bubble mapping is a powerful technique allowing you to make the best use of
your brainpower. Bubble mapping techniques makes you more productive by
harnessing the full range of your creative skills. It helps you convert
any random thoughts generated while you are the most creative into the linear
thoughts needed most when communicating.
Bubble mapping is a tools for free thinking...
Bubble mapping consists of:
-
Writing down a central concept, word or idea
-
Main themes of the subject radiate from the central concept as main branches
-
Minor themes are then linked to the main themes
-
And so on...
-
All the branches form a nodal structure around the subject idea

Quasi- Structured Capture
The key to bubble mapping is the freedom to think. From the central subject,
just let your thoughts run wild. Keep capturing ideas. Soon the picture builds
up and as if by magic, amongst the ideas is structure.
Lateral Thinking
Bubble maps aid lateral thinking. Without the all constraints of order and lists
removed, your ideas flow. On review you may find you've captures something
unique.
Exchanging Ideas
One of the most exciting aspects of bubble mapping is how easily they convey
information. Almost without coaching, someone can pick up your bubble map and
enter your mind.
Using Bubble mapping
Use bubble maps:
-
As a presentation tool - easily walk through your thoughts with others
-
As an aid to presentation - Using just the map you can be sure to visit all
your ideas and key notes
-
For minute taking - better than flat lists, capture the progress of meetings,
actions, etc in a map
-
Breaking writers block - you will see your ideas flow.
Special Thanks
I was introduced to bubble mapping by James Murphy, ITIM UK. His description of
bubble mapping was delivered with such enthusiasm that there was no choice but
to be hooked - immediately. What was most impressive is the way he described
the concept - he used a bubble map. Of course, why not, this tool is
self-describing.
So, if you're looking for the best introduction to bubble mapping, ask James.
